Hurricane Katrina's Anniversary
A leader in the relief response, Catholic Charities takes a look back at the charitable assistance provided by staff, volunteers, and donors.
August marked the anniversary of Katrina’s landfall on the Gulf Coast leaving in her wake a trail of demolished homes, family members separated, and lives lost. Out of this destruction and chaos, the best of human nature emerged as volunteers from Washington, DC organized to help families displaced by the storm. A leader in the relief response, Catholic Charities takes a look back at the charitable assistance provided by staff, volunteers, and donors and glances forward to continuing efforts.
- Catholic Charities organized more than 75 volunteers to assist 430 evacuees.
- Fifty-eight apartments were rented and 60 apartments were furnished to support over 300 individuals.
- Catholic Charities made more than 525 referrals for services across DC.
- SHARE Food Network distributed 625 food packages to more than 200 families.
- Catholic Charities Foundation through the generosity of our donors and community partners, especially the Freddie Mac Foundation and Mr. A. James Clark, raised more than $695,000 for the response efforts.
- More than $120,000 was used for rent assistance and almost $98,000 for household and personal items ranging from beds, kitchen tables, and pillow cases.
Katrina survivors continue to receive ongoing support through Family Centers in the DC area.
