The retired vice admiral was named to the position in April 2023 and assumed the role on July 1, 2023. He retired from the U.S. Navy after a 36-year career. He most recently served as deputy commander of U.S. Central Command.

A priest in the Archdiocese of Washington since 1973, he previously served as the head of Catholic Charities from 2011 to 2023. Father John writes an award-winning twice-a-month column in the Catholic Standard and El Pregonero and shares a meditation called “Pray on This.”
