Giving Back after a Life of Fulfillment

by Foster Dennin | January 8, 2025

Sharlene Hardy was a proud graduate of Catholic Charities’ Kennedy School, where she completed her studies in 1976. Her time at the school, which serves young people with developmental differences, nurtured her passion for music and drama. Hardy thrived in the theater program and starred in productions such as Hello, Dolly! and Fiddler on the Roof.

The support and encouragement Hardy received at the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute school laid the foundation for a fulfilling and independent life. After graduating, she embarked on a 46-year career as a customer service assistant and data-entry clerk with the U.S. General Services Administration, where her dedication earned her numerous awards and recognition.

In 2004, she moved into a supervised apartment in Silver Spring supported by the Kennedy Institute and later by the National Children’s Center, ensuring she could continue to live with dignity and independence.

Inspired by the guidance and care she received, Hardy sought to make a lasting difference for others. In 2010, she informed Catholic Charities of her intention to include a gift from her estate to support both the Kennedy School and programs aiding those who are poor and homeless. She passed away in August 2024 at the age of 66.

“Sharlene knew she had to set up an estate plan, and she wanted to support the school that had supported her in life,” said George Ferguson, her guardian and executor. “Her gift reflects her belief in the power of education and the importance of helping others.”

Kevin Daly, director of leadership and annual giving at Catholic Charities, echoed this sentiment. “Sharlene’s gift shows that anyone can make a significant future contribution by including a designation in their estate plan. It costs nothing now but is worth a lot in the future,” he said.

Hardy’s life serves as a testament to the transformative impact of education and encouragement. Her passion for the arts, dedication to her career and unwavering commitment to giving back remind us all of the importance of community and the power of leaving a legacy that uplifts others.
