Exemplary leadership skills cited in unanimous endorsement by board of directors
WASHINGTON, March 28, 2023 — Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington has named
retired Vice Admiral James Malloy its new president and CEO. John Veihmeyer, chair of the Catholic
Charities Board of Directors, made the announcement today following a nationwide search facilitated by
Russell Reynolds Associates.
Malloy retired in October 2022 as deputy commander of U.S. Central Command and succeeds Msgr. John
J. Enzler, who is retiring after 12 years as the agency’s president and CEO. Malloy’s appointment is
effective July 1, 2023. Catholic Charities is the most comprehensive provider of social services in the
Washington Maryland area, serving more than 167,000 people a year.
“Jim is a proven and tested leader, but just as importantly, he is a man of deep faith who is passionate
about spending the next phase of his career making a difference and caring for the underserved,”
Veihmeyer said. “We couldn’t be more excited for Catholic Charities to welcome this incredible
individual as its next leader.”
Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory, archbishop of Washington, appointed Malloy to his new position after a
unanimous recommendation by the Catholic Charities Board of Directors. Malloy, 60, becomes the 14th
top leader in the agency’s 94-year history.
“The leadership of Jim Malloy will be an asset for Catholic Charities as it moves into the next phase of
its history,” Cardinal Gregory said. “He has a clear concern for the poor among us, and he will be a strong
advocate for those in need.”
“The opportunity to be the next president and CEO of Catholic Charities is humbling,” Malloy said. “But
it energizes me because the work that this organization does truly matters. Its effects are evident — both
immediate and long term.”
A graduate of St. John’s College High School of Washington, Malloy grew up in Silver Spring, Md. He is
a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and went on to earn three advanced degrees, including a Master of
Health Sciences in Emergency and Disaster Management from Touro University of California.
He served 36 years as a naval officer at home, at sea, and abroad, commanding two ships and a squadron,
and culminating in the command of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain.
Throughout his naval career, he was a Catholic lay leader aboard the ships on which he served. As a past
member of the board of directors of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps, he was a mentor to students in the
Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps. He has also been a volunteer with Helping Hands for
Veterans in Tampa, Fla.
Malloy and his wife, Kimberly Ann, have three adult sons and are members of St. Alphonsus Rodriguez
Parish near Ellicott City, Md.
In May and June, Malloy will work closely with Msgr. Enzler during a period of transition. This summer,
Msgr. Enzler will move to a part-time role supporting the agency’s Catholic identity and social justice
mission.
“Jim Malloy is a wonderful example of who we are called to be,” Msgr. Enzler said. “His appointment is
a gift to Catholic Charities’ clients and to all of us.”
