New York Avenue Men’s Shelter
The New York Avenue Men’s Shelter is a low-barrier shelter open to anyone who identifies as male over the age of 18. Residents are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
About the Program
New York Avenue Men’s Shelter offers a hot dinner, access to showers and personal toiletries, and a bed on a nightly basis. The low-barrier shelter is open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Case-management services are available and include referrals to substance abuse, mental health, medical, employment and other social services. A medical clinic operated by Unity Health Care for the Homeless, is open six hours a week, Monday and Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
In a work bed/employment program, case managers work with clients who have jobs to develop service plans, set up savings accounts and move on to permanent housing.
Shuttle service to downtown Washington is provided several times a day to assist clients in getting to and from work, day programs and other resources. Monthly town hall meetings and client council meetings are just two ways that residents can be involved in the shelter and offer feedback.
The shelter also serves as a 24-hour hypothermia emergency shelter during the coldest months of the year, from November to March.
