We gathered heads of school, service-learning coordinators and students from 17 schools for a service summit for Catholic high schools. With a theme of “Inspired by Faith, We Cultivate Courage to Care and Strength to Serve,” the summit held at Georgetown Preparatory School allowed participants to talk about service as a response to the principles of Catholic social teaching, trade best practices and share aspirations. Students and faculty learned about service opportunities with Catholic Charities.

Maggie O’Neill, director of Catholic Charities’ Volunteer Engagement Office, told faculty and staff that students can “bring joy and a sense of belonging” to service. With their involvement with Catholic Charities, students can “bear witness to the work” of the agency.

High school students and service-learning coordinators mingled to discuss three questions: What one service project was most memorable? What is one thing your service program does well? What is something you hope to do in service?

Rev. James R. Van Dyke, S.J., president of Georgetown Prep, welcomed students and service-learning coordinators from 17 Catholic high schools to Catholic Charities’ summit on service. Service, he noted, is “not just help but care.”
The service summit concluded with remarks by Kerry Alys Robinson, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA. “I have so much faith in your generation,” she told students. She shared a personal story with students, saying her experience at their age exposed her to moral heroes. “Our world yearns for moral heroism.”
